Electrochemist
Full-Time
Burnaby, BC
Anodyne is a chemicals company helping businesses build better products. Join our team to help shape the future of chemistry.
About the job
About Anodyne
Anodyne Chemistries is a Burnaby-based company reinventing how the world makes its most important chemicals and fuels. Our team of scientists and engineers combines electrocatalysis, synthetic biology and process design to replace carbon-intensive production with cleaner, electrified routes. Electrocatalyst development sits at the heart of everything we do. As we scale up, we are also broadening our catalyst toolkit to produce a wider range of sustainable chemicals.
The Role
As our Electrochemist, you will design and run the benchtop experiments that tell us how our bio-based and inorganic catalysts behave, and how to make them better. Your work on the catalyst–electrode interface will directly shape which catalysts we take forward, and how quickly we can expand into new products. You will be a key member of our electrochemistry team and work closely with biologists, chemists and engineers.
What You'll Do
Characterise bio-electrocatalysts and inorganic catalysts using benchtop and small-volume electrochemical cells (e.g., three-electrode cells, H-cells).
Apply core techniques such as CV, LSV, CA, CP and EIS to measure catalyst activity, stability and behaviour at the catalyst–electrode interface.
Quantify performance metrics, including Faradaic efficiency, selectivity, current density, overpotential and stability.
Improve catalyst selectivity by testing electrode preparation, catalyst immobilisation, electrolyte composition and operating conditions.
Plan experiments with clear hypotheses, then analyse results, spot trends or anomalies, and recommend next steps.
Develop and validate standard electrochemistry protocols so results are reproducible across the team.
Troubleshoot experimental set-ups, instruments and protocols when results don't add up.
Communicate findings through concise reports, presentations and team discussions.
Maintain a safe, well-organised lab, care for electrochemical workstations, and keep thorough, traceable records.
What You Bring
Core Requirements
An MSc or PhD in chemistry, with 2+ years of hands-on benchtop electrochemistry experience.
Confidence running electrochemical workstations (potentiostats/galvanostats) and three-electrode set-ups, and interpreting the data they produce.
Solid wet chemistry and general lab skills, with a resourceful approach to solving problems.
Experience writing or refining experimental protocols.
Clear, organised documentation habits and the ability to juggle several experiments at once.
Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative, cross-disciplinary team.
Bonus Points
Experience in electrocatalysis, bio-electrocatalysis or electrolysis.
Experience immobilising proteins or enzymes on electrodes, or working with biosensors.
Experience with electrode development for batteries, supercapacitors or fuel cells.
Experience with H-cells, flow cells or other divided-cell configurations.
Experience with data analysis or scripting skills (e.g., Python, MATLAB, EC-Lab).
Experience with different analytical techniques and methods.
Benefits & Culture
Health: Medical, dental and vision coverage.
Time off: 20 days' paid vacation and 5 paid sick days per year.
Working style: A lab-based role at our Burnaby facility. We are a small, fast-moving team where your ideas reach the bench quickly and your results shape real decisions.
We welcome applicants of all backgrounds. If you're excited by this role but don't meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
